King Bāhubalī heard the news regarding Emperor Bharata's valor from his army, precisely how he taught his entire army a lesson with the strength of a little finger. However, even upon hearing it, Bāhubalī did not feel fear nor considered avoiding the battle. It is indeed true! One's karma is not under anyone's control. Furthermore, this decision will be instrumental in Bāhubalī embracing monkhood.
Bāhubalī called his commander-in-chief, Guṇavasantaka, and said, "Prepare for battle. We should not delay any longer." Upon receiving the king's command, the army prepared for battle. Bāhubalī also proceeded to his palace. On the way, he paid his respects to his mother, Queen Sunandā. With a heavy heart, his mother disapproved of his actions, saying, "In the world, the younger brother bows to the elder brother. By doing this, is the younger brother considered to be under the authority of his elder brother? Because of this ignorance, your other brothers behaved the same way with Emperor Bharata, and now you are heading in the same direction. Do you have no concern for our gratification and happiness? Hearing his mother's stern words, Bāhubalī thought that if he told his mother the truth, she would be worried and upset. Therefore, Bāhubalī said, 'Mother! Your advice is appropriate. By bowing to the elder brother, I will not become smaller. Until now, anger and inappropriate thoughts have resided in my mind. But after hearing your words, there is no distress in my mind. You need not worry. I will express my love to brother Bharata.” Hearing Bāhubalī's words, Mother Sunandā felt satisfied and returned to her palace.
Even though Bāhubalī's words were soothing to his mother, they were not entirely truthful. He had not yet embraced Emperor Bharata’s sovereignty and intended to go to battle. Afterward, he proceeded toward his royal chamber, where his queens tried to persuade him not to engage in battle with Emperor Bharata. They pointed out that their sisters were married to Emperor Bharata, and if there was conflict between the two brothers, how could they meet each other? After hearing the queens' words in silence, Bāhubalī reassured them with the same words he had told his mother. He departed after comforting his 8,000 queens. After dressing up in royal armour and adornments, Bāhubalī went outside his palace, where Makand - a decorated elephant, all his sons, queens, relatives, and a four-sectioned army stood. Bāhubalī mounted his elephant and proceeded toward the battlefield. Bāhubalī's appearance on the elephant was no less than that of Indra, and a white umbrella adorned his head. All the citizens of his kingdom came out or climbed onto the roofs of their houses, and they were happy to see Bāhubalī leaving in all his grandeur. Everyone looked at Baahubali with wide eyes as if they would not get to see him after that. As Bāhubalī, adorned with power and magnificence, moved out of Podanpur city through the royal road, he encountered many inauspicious signs. For instance, a crow flew from the right side of the road to the left, and a lizard sitting on a tree on the right side of the road appeared speaking. Despite seeing these inauspicious signs, Bāhubalī ignored them. Continuing, he saw a person removing all his ornaments and clothing, possibly indicating his future asceticism. Seeing all these signs, Bāhubalī's ministers and well-wishers advised him to abandon the idea of going to battle that day, as it was not an auspicious time. However, Bāhubalī did not heed their advice and eventually reached before Emperor Bharata.
बाहुबली युद्ध गमन – सेना से भरत के पराक्रम के संबंध में समाचार प्राप्त हुआ कि किस प्रकार एक अंगुली के बल से उन्होंने सम्पूर्ण सेना को शिक्षा दी। परन्तु यह सुनकर भी उन्हें भय नही हुआ, उन्हें युद्ध टालने का विचार भी नही आया। सत्य ही है! कर्मोदय किसी के आधीन नही। आगे इसी निमित्त से बाहुबली को दीक्षा ग्रहण होनी है। बाहुबली ने अपने सेनापति गुणवसन्तक को बुलाकर कहा कि “युद्ध की तैयारी की जायें, हमें अब विलम्ब नही करना चाहिए” । महाराज का आदेश पाकर सेना सज्ज हुई। बाहुबली भी अपने महल की ओर गये, मार्ग में माता सुनन्दा के दर्शन हुए, माँ ने बडे ही भारी मन से पुत्र के इस कार्य को धिक्कारा, वे बोली कि लोक में छोटा भाई बडे भाई को नमस्कार करता ही है, क्या ऐसा करने से वह उसके आधीन देखा जाता है? इसी अज्ञानता के कारण तुम्हारे बाकी भाईयों ने भी भरत के साथ ऐसा व्यवहार किया और अब तुम भी उसी ओर जा रहे हो। तुम्हे हमारे संतोष और सुख का क्या जरा भी विचार नही है। माता के कठोर वचन सुनकर बाहुबली ने सोचा कि यदि माता को सत्य बताया तो वे और चिंतित होंगी अतः बाहुबली बोले “माते! आपका कहना उचित ही है, बडे भाई को नमस्कार करने से मैं छोटा थोडे ही हो जाऊँगा, अभी तक मेरे मन में क्रोध और विकृत परिणाम थे, परन्तु आपकी बात सुनकर मुझे अब कोई क्लेश मन में नही है। मैं अब भ्राता भरत से प्रेम भेंट करने अवश्य जाऊँगा, आप चिंता ना करें।” बाहुबली के मधुर वचन सुनकर माता सुनन्दा को संतोष हुआ और वे वहाँ से अपने महल की ओर चली गयीं। बाहुबली को भी माता के संतोष में अपना सुख दिखाई दिया परन्तु माता से कहे वचन पूर्ण सत्य नही थे, उन्होंने भरत को अभी भी नही अपनाया था, उनकी मंशा तो अभी भी युद्ध की ही है। तत्पश्चात वे अपने श्रृंगार ग्रह की ओर जाने लगे, जहाँ उनकी रानियों ने उन्हें बहुत समझाया कि वे भरत से युद्ध ना करें क्योंकि उनकी भी बहनें भरत से विवाहित हैं, यदि आप दोनों में परस्पर क्लेश होगा तो हम किसप्रकार उनसे मिल सकेंगे इत्यादि। रानियों की बातें मौन पूर्वक सुनकर बाहुबली अंत में वहीं वचन कहने लगे जो उन्होंने माता से कहे थे और अपनी 8000 रानियों को भी सान्त्वना देकर वहाँ से चले गये। युद्धाभूषणों से सज्ज होकर बाहुबली अपने महल से बाहर निकलते हैं, जहाँ द्वार पर माकंद नाम का सुन्दर सश्रृंगार हाथी, उनके सभी पुत्र, रानियाँ, परिजन एवं चतुरंग सेना खडी है। बाहुबली हाथी पर चढ जाते हैं और महल से रण की ओर प्रस्थान करते हैं। हाथी पर सवार बाहुबली की शोभा इन्द्र से कम नही थी, उनके मस्तक पर एक श्वेतछत्र सुशोभित हो रहा था, सारे नगर वासी अपने-अपने घरों के बाहर एवं छतों पर चढकर बाहुबली को समस्त वैभव के साथ प्रयाण करते हुए देख आनन्दित हो रही थी। सब लोग आँख भर-भरकर बाहुबली को देख रहे थे मानो आज के बाद उनके दर्शन भाग्य में नही होंगे। इसप्रकार शक्ति-वैभव सम्पन्न बाहुबली राजमार्ग से होते हुए पोदनपुर नगर से बाहर निकल रहे थे। परन्तु मार्ग में जाते हुए अनेक अशुभ संकेत भी उन्हें देखने को मिले जैसे आकाश में कौआ दाई ओर से बाई ओर उड रहा था, दाहिने तरफ़ पेड पर बैठी छिपकली बोल रही थी। इन अशुभ संकेतों को देखकर भी बाहुबली ने उन्हें अनदेखा कर दिया। आगे बढने पर एक व्यक्ति अपने सभी आभरण एवं वस्रादिक उतारते हुये देखा गया, जोकि शायद वह उनके भावी दिगम्बरत्व की ओर संकेत कर रहा था। इन सभी संकेतों को देख बाहुबली के मंत्री एवं इष्टजनों ने उनसे निवेदन किया कि आज वे युद्धगमन के विचार को त्याग दें आज शुभ मुहुर्त नही है, तथापि बाहुबली नही माने और प्रस्थान करते हुए भरत के समक्ष पहुँच गये।
